StanChart Makes Raft Of South Asia Hires

has announced eight appointments in its Global South Asian Community (GSAC) team, all of whom are based in Singapore. 

The appointees are:

-- Murtaza Gilani, managing director, team leader, GSAC, private banking. Murtaza reports to Srinivas (Srini) Siripurapu, regional head, private banking, ASEAN & South Asia, and global head, GSAC, Murtaza was most recently a senior vice president at DBS. He has experience in wealth management for affluent and high net worth clients in South Asia and the Middle East, and has held senior positions in other financial institutions like Samba Financial Group and NIB Bank (subsidiary of Temasek Holdings); 

-- Hussain Poonawala as MD, team leader, GSAC, private banking, who reports to Siripurapu; he most recently was at DBS; 

-- Rahul Chowdhury, Sujit Pillai, Richu Singh, executive director, relationship manager, GSAC, private banking; and 

-- Rahul Gopalakrishnan, Sonam Gupta and Kunal Mukherjee, directors, RMs, GSAC, Private Banking

Recently, StanChart also appointed Stephen Atkinson as regional head, private banking, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and global head, private banking referrals.

Last week the lender said its private banking arm logged a pre-tax loss of $5 million in the six months to 30 June this year, widening from a loss of $1.0 million a year earlier. Income rose but higher costs pushed the number into the red. Among other details about the private bank, StanChart, which is listed in the UK while making most of its money in Asia and Africa, said underlying income of $271 million rose by 12 per cent, with wealth management and retail products rising 18 per cent and 3 per cent respectively. Assets under management increased by $5 billion or 8 per cent driven by positive market movements, and $1.6 billion of net new money came through the door.

Also, Standard Chartered Bank has appointed Tracey McDermott as group head of compliance, subject to regulatory approval. This added to her role as group head of corporate affairs and brand and marketing.
